Placement
Where on the body a tattoo is positioned, affecting its look, pain, aging, and visibility.
Placement is the decision of where on the body a tattoo is positioned, a choice that shapes how the design looks, how it ages, how visible it is, and how the session feels. Placement influences far more than aesthetics. Different areas of the body stretch, wrinkle, and fade at different rates, so a design on the inner forearm will age differently from one on the hand, foot, or ribs. Placement also affects pain, since areas over bone or with thin skin tend to be more sensitive than fleshier regions. Artists weigh placement alongside size and composition, because a design must suit the shape and dimensions of its location to flow well and remain legible over time. Visibility is another factor: some clients want a tattoo easily shown or hidden for professional or personal reasons, and certain placements are harder to conceal. A client should think about long-term lifestyle, sun exposure, and whether the area is prone to friction from clothing, which can wear ink faster. Discussing placement early helps the artist recommend an area that supports the design's longevity and impact. Thoughtful placement balances personal meaning, practical aging, and how the piece harmonizes with existing tattoos and the body overall.
