Aftercare
The cleaning and protection routine that helps a new tattoo heal well.
Aftercare is the routine of cleaning, moisturizing, and protecting a fresh tattoo so it heals cleanly and retains its appearance. It begins the moment the session ends and typically continues for several weeks while the skin repairs itself. A common approach involves leaving the initial covering on for the time the artist recommends, then gently washing the area with mild fragrance-free soap and lukewarm water, patting it dry, and applying a thin layer of a suitable healing ointment or unscented lotion. Keeping the tattoo clean reduces the chance of complications, while light, regular moisturizing helps manage the dryness and tightness that accompany healing. During this period it is sensible to avoid soaking the tattoo in baths, pools, or the sea, to keep it out of direct sun, and to resist picking or scratching as it peels. Wearing loose, breathable clothing over the area also helps. Specific instructions vary by artist and by the use of products such as second skin films, so following the guidance given at the studio is important. If unusual swelling, spreading redness, heat, or discharge appears, that may signal infection and warrants advice from a medical professional rather than self-treatment.
