Second Skin

A breathable adhesive medical film worn over a fresh tattoo while it heals.

Second skin is a thin, breathable, adhesive medical film applied over a fresh tattoo to protect it during the earliest part of healing. Sold under brand names such as Saniderm, Dermalize, and similar products, it forms a transparent waterproof barrier that shields the new tattoo from friction, dirt, and bacteria while still allowing the skin to breathe. The film traps a layer of plasma and the body's natural fluids against the tattoo, which can keep the area moist, reduce scabbing, and ease the discomfort of the open-wound stage. An artist typically applies the first piece at the end of the session, and it may be worn for a day or two before being carefully removed, often under running water to loosen the adhesive gently. Some routines use a second, fresh piece for several more days, following the artist's instructions. It is normal to see cloudy fluid pooling under the film during wear. However, if the seal leaks, the skin reacts to the adhesive, or significant redness and irritation appear, the film should be removed and standard aftercare followed instead. Not everyone's skin tolerates these products, so anyone with sensitivities or signs of an adverse reaction should stop use and consult their artist or a professional.
